DESCRIPTION: Portrait of Mrs. Harriet Newell (1793–1812), appearing as the frontispiece to Leonard Woods’s A Sermon Preached at Haverhill, Mass. (Boston, 1814). Mrs. Newell was one of the earliest American women missionaries, sailing in 1812 with her husband, the Rev. Samuel Newell, and the Judsons as part of the first mission organized by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. After being ordered to leave Burma, the Newells traveled to the Isle of France (Mauritius), where she died later that year, soon regarded as the first martyr of the American missionary movement. Her memoir, published in 1815 and reprinted almost annually for the next twenty-five years, became a widely read devotional work. The portrait accompanied Rev. Newell’s message to her mother: that Mrs. Newell “never repented of any sacrifice she had made for Christ” and was comforted in her final days by the thought of having “had it in her heart to do something for the heathen,” though she died before their mission work began.
