• DESCRIPTION: From "New York, Past, Present and Future" by E. Porter Belden, Projector of the Model of New York. "F. B Nichols del. W. Wellstood, sc."

This mid-19th-century print, Custom House, published by the New York firm Prall, Lewis & Co., depicts the United States Custom House in lower Manhattan, a hub of the city’s maritime commerce. Located at the foot of Wall Street, the building was a symbol of New York’s status as the nation’s busiest port, where duties were collected on imported goods. Prall, Lewis & Co., active in the 1840s–1850s, specialized in engravings and lithographs of notable city landmarks for both residents and visitors. This view is prized for its architectural accuracy and for documenting the bustling commercial district of antebellum New York, when shipping and trade drove the city’s rapid expansion.
