DESCRIPTION: A fine example of Antonius Sanderus' map the Dioceses of Ypres. On the top is a panoramic view of the town and along the bottom and sides are twenty vignettes of prominent buildings. The author was Antonius Sanderus (1586 -1664) who studied theology for some years under Malderus at Louvain and Estius at Douai and was an ordained priest. Sanderus had the map engraved by Henricus Hondius in 1634 and sold the plate to Joan and Cornelius Blaeu in 1641. It only appeared as a separate issue or in the late issues of Blaeu’s “Atlas Maior.” A seldom seen map.
